Abstract

Claudio Sánchez-Albornoz (1893-1984) is a key figure among Spanish historians. His production is of great importance, especially because it has been very influential. The role played by Sánchez-Albornoz during Spain’s Second Republic (1931-1936) explains the fact that he has been frequently associated with progressive attitudes. He was clearly anti-Franco, although also anti-Marxist. However, contrary to his political commitment, his work as a historian shows a connection with a line of thought closely related to 19th -century Spanish conservative historiography. His legacy has been unevenly evaluated, although we can say that he has been very influential in the writing of Spanish history in the second half of the 20th century. This article is structured around these three elements. I propose that Sánchez-Albornoz’s work as a historian must be considered aligned with a line of thought usually associated with National-Catholicism. So far, this aspect of his work has not been studied.
