Tamaño del surtido y ventas de la categoría: ¿existe una relación directa?

Resumen
El surtido es una de las herramientas más importantes con las que cuenta el minorista para diferenciarse de sus competidores, atraer al consumidor al establecimiento y elevar su nivel de ventas. En este trabajo se analiza si, efectivamente, existe una relación directa entre el tamaño del surtido – en término de número de referencias – y el nivel de ventas de la categoría. Para ello contamos con datos de panel sobre la evolución semanal del tamaño del surtido y el nivel de ventas de doce categorías de producto entre 2008 y 2012 en el conjunto de los hipermercados y supermercados que operan en España. Los resultados obtenidos confirman que la relación entre ambas variables es positiva y significativa en todos los casos, si bien la intensidad de la misma va a depender la frecuencia de compra y del nivel de penetración de la categoría de producto en particular.
