Abstract

Media production within prisons can become an important tool for the prisoners’ social inclusion. This research explores these initiatives in Spain. Despite the fact that efforts of media literacy as a tool for intervention in prisons remain invisible to the majority of society, and even to prisons, we have counted 39 different experiences in the Spanish context. Through a qualitative methodology based on in-depth interviews with 29 prisoners and 6 educators involved in these projects in Spanish prisons, we have concluded that these activities help to break down stigmas and –even more important– self-stigmas. Without claiming to be representative, the results show that these activities may become a valuable social insertion tool and also a personal transformation instrument.
