Abstract
The European Cemeteries Route has been recognized by the Council of Europe like a Cultural Route in 2010. In this way, this Cultural Route has been equated with other significant routes like the Santiago de Compostelas Route (it was the first one to get this category, in 1987). This badge reveals the cultural and natural wealth of the cemeteries like singular spaces of the cities and towns. The cemeteries are presented like open museums or open - air museums, and their activation and recognition of their value are part of the cultural and touristic offer of the cities. So, this route promotes the links between the Europea n citizenship and its cultural heritage. In Spain, there are 21 cemeteries in this cultural route and, by the moment, only four of them are Andalusian (two of them are founder member). In this essay, we are analyzing the European Route of Cemeteries in Andalusia, attending the heritage features, in special, those that are linked with the intangible heritage, and also how this matter is been managing since the touristic point of view.
