Abstract

The European Union revised the Basic Rules for Health Protection by Directive 96/29 / Euratom, which was approved on May 13, 1996. Within the scope of the directive, have been included for the first time those practices or activities that may involve a significant increase in exposure of workers and members of the public to natural radiation sources and can not be disregarded from the point of view of radiation protection. The necessity of fullfilling the requirement of the Directive, in terms of identifying risk workplaces and transposition of its content to the laws of the different countries and their implementation, has made the interests of member states European Union radiation protection aspects to natural radiation has increased lately. In the present work we have performed a literature review of various non-nuclear industries (INN) or NORM industries (acronym for Natural Occurring Radioactive Material), focusing on existing radiation risks to workers and the public while considering other aspects such as processing techniques, the isotopic content of the starting materials, by-products and waste, re-use of by-products and its radiological implications and environmental radiological impact caused by any of these industries. Additionally, we have compiled the information on the studies carried out in our country to date.
