This doctoral thesis provides the opportunity to know and value the issue of social responsibility by the universities from the province of Meta in regards to the personal, institutional and social commitment which these entities of higher education must have. Therefore, the following issue arises: How to strengthen the roll of social responsibility in the universities of Meta so as to enable a new identity, commitment and a sustainable development? The purpose of this study was to know the applicability of the good practices taken from the hidden curriculum. To do this a document and bibliographic review was carried out about subject of study; a methodical model about University Social Responsibility (USR) was designed grounded in the theory given by Francisco Vallaeys and Bernardo Klisberg, and the empirical work of the academic community. A proper methodology was designed based on the study of an institution of higher education; the probe was applied to 225 students, 28 alumni, 27 staff members and 63 professors. The thesis is structured by 13 chapters gathered in four parts: The first part presents the introduction or the rationale for the research composed of the background, the problems with research, the objectives, the hypothesis to support, the reasons to justify the topic and its applicability; what is to be accomplished, the limitations given, and what the accomplishments of the research were. In the second part the theoretical foundation was laid, several research findings given at different universities at world level were analyzed. Moreover, a brief analysis about the integrating, professional formation in universities in regards to the sustainable development of the region was made. Also, the characterization of the territorial scope was designed where the research took place, and a strategic analysis was conducted in the institution subject of study. The third part which is about the methodology implemented: analytical, descriptive, and a mixture of both, included material used to collect information such as surveys. Furthermore, the statistical program SSPS was applied for the tabulation plus graphics, quantitative data and the Likert scale for qualitative analysis. In the fourth part the given results are presented and collated, 15 strategic points were elaborated and executed by an 87% with the participation of the academic community especially the students; this enabled the answer to the question: How to strengthen the roll of social responsibility in the universities of Meta so as to enable a new identity, commitment and a sustainable development? Several achievements came out of the self-diagnosis and analysis within the empirical work. Clear and concrete results were the product of indicators which allowed for the outline of strategies and fulfill the objective of strengthening the roll of Social University Responsibility from the substantial functions. It is important to mention the fact that 87% of these strategic points were put into research leaving the remaining for the community and the deepening in the area. It was realized that even though is true that practices of good university social responsibility are being developed, there is a need for more formation, more commitment, more attention to the management of good practices beginning with the faculty, research, extension and direction; the students, by a 95%, are willing to participate in such activities and therefore generate a major commitment with the sustainable development. The findings obtained in this thesis enable the advancement to further investigation and uphold the group for Sustainable Social Development.
