Abstract

Both ultraviolet (UV-A; UV-B) and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) received on the Huelva's occidental coast during 2004-2006 have been characterized in this Thesis, assessing the risk of UV-exposed population and knowing the temporal UV-radiation distribution. Then, their influence on two vegetable cultures of commercial interest, the microalga Dunaliella and Fragaria x ananassa, is analyzed. The UV-radiation potential (mainly UV-A) on the carotenoid accumulation without affecting culture viability has been confirmed and the essential role of UV-B on the ß-carotene accumulation to the detriment of cellular viability was also checked. Besides, a Dunaliella mutant showing fast growth and similar levels of carotenoid accumulation has been assayed. Finally, the UV-radiation effect on the productivity and nutritional quality of two strawberry cultivars, "Camarosa" and "Ventana", has been evaluated.
