Résumé

Tourism destination management is an increasingly complex task. Traditional research in tourism destination management has tended to use a reductionist approach in order to monitor certain flow variables or to measure discrete relationships between variables. The limitations of this approach in research are now apparent, as tourism development has a decisive influence of many elements within a destination, reinforcing the need for a new approach to research in tourism destination management. As tourism is a complex open system, an overview of the systems dynamics methodology is provided, leading to the proposal of a dynamic model suited for the strategic management of tourism destinations. This dynamic model makes it possible to experiment with diverse strategies and observe their impacts over time, upon the systems components. Hopefully, this will facilitate the efforts of tourism destination administrators to achieve desired levels of sustainability, based on a fair representation of the real system.
