Abstract

The aim of this Thesis was to study the role of photoperiod, nutrition, and exogenous melatonin (MEL) in the regulation of LH secretion in Mediterranean goats, analyzing the possible neuroendocrine systems (NS) involved. Likewise, we have examined whether plasma MEL concentrations ([MEL]) vary between jugular veins and what is its relation with seasonal reproductive activity. In Exp-1, the results showed that photoperiod is the main factor controlling reproductive seasonality and that nutrition has an effect on it in the secretion of LH. In Exp-2, the action of the NS was modified by nutrition. In Exp-3, the NS studied in the stimulation of LH by exogenous MEL, were affected by nutrition. The Exp-4 showed that [MEL] are highly variable between jugular veins in the same animal but not in the general population, and repeatable for each individual.
