Abstract

The first part o the present thesis was devoted to the design of a coupled sequential extraction and differential X ray diffraction procedure to characterize poorly crystalline mineral phases. The study of the field passive treatment system in Monte Romero was covered in the second part of this thesis. The system designed and implemented in Monte Romero was based on the use of limestones and MgO as reagents dispersed in pine wood shaving (inert matrix). This experiment achieved a complete or almost complete water removal for Al, As, Cu, Cr and Pb, and higher than 70% Fe. The encouraging results obtained in the field experiment in Monte Romero motivated the implementation of a full scale passive treatment system in Mina Esperanza. The third and final part of this thesis is devoted to the monitoring and characterization of this passive treatment during its 20 month operation.
