Abstract

The Odie] river is severely polluted by acid mine drainage (AMD). So far, the only technology that has shown good results to abate this AMD is the dispersed alkaline substrate (DAS), this technology relies on limestone dissolution (limestone-DAS) for trivalent metals removal (Fe and Al); and on magnesium oxide dissolution (MgO-DAS) for divalent metals retention (Zn, Mn, Cd, Co and Ni). The Odiel river is under important legislative and social pressures (Water Framework Directive and future construction of Alcolea reservoir). Due to this situation, a widespread use of DAS technology is expected in a great number of AMD pollution sources, with a concomitant increase in the generation of metallic wastes. Hence, obtaining a proper characterization and classification of the newly generated wastes is essential to la y the foundations for their correct management. Moreover, and by the use of geochemical modelíng, a conceptual restoration plan using DAS technology was developed.
