This doctoral thesis analyzes what is the didactic treatment which heritage receives in the most frequently used Social Science books within Secondary School in Spain. We start from a theoretical framework that is supported on three pillars: the concept of heritage, education on heritage and textbooks as a resource in the education of Social Sciences. We understand heritage elements as symbols of the different cultures, as well as possible generators of identity and intercultural connection elements. In this sense, we consider the importance of the study of heritage treatment in books since they are still the main material used in education. Thanks to the analysis results we have been able to determine some issues regarding the didactic treatment of heritage in textbooks, as well as to propose some parameters which can guide to the elaboration of materials in relation to Heritage Education.
