Abstract
This paper analyzes the unemployment duration for the group of Andalusian fishermen forced to stop their fishing activities when the Fisheries Agreement between the European Union and the Kingdom of Morocco expired on 30 November 1999. Using competing risk models, we identified the factors that concern the duration of the unemployment for each of the considered destination states. We differ between the employment in the Workers' Special Regime of the sea and the employment in a Regime different from this one, for importance in the formulation of measurements that favour the restructuring or diversification of the fishermen. Between the obtained results, it has been verified that the age and the labour experience concern the durations in the unemployment when the employment is in a regime different from the special one of the sea, but not when it is the special regime of the sea of the Social Security. These results seem to be logical, since when the event of interest is the abandonment of the state of unemployment in alternative activities to fishing, the fact that the individual possesses previous experience in other sectors makes the process of restructuring easier. In addition, the youngest fishermen find alternative employments to the fishing before their elders due to the fact that they prove to be less reluctant to change profession.
