Abstract

The entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol obliges Spanish cement factories covered by Directive 2003/87/EC to control their carbon dioxide emissions, being forced to check them regularly, so they do not exceed the emissions allowed. The search for the optimal combination of available measures setting carbon emissions to production targets compatible with environmental requirements, require new approaches in planning industrial production, to incorporate new parameters and variables related to the same, to evaluate the impact of operational decisions on carbon emissions in cement production. In this paper we address the optimization decisions through an integrated approach using a linear programming model, which jointly considers viable alternatives to reduce emissions, considering on the one hand, those derived from the application of the flexibility mechanisms of the Protocol Kyoto and other measures to improve products and production processes. Their implementation will determine, in advance, decisions that optimize the use of the productive resources of the cement industry.
