Abstract

The appropriate measure of performance of health services has returned strongly to the scene after questioning the sustainability of the health system. Traditionally, the measurement was made using indicators not only of individual character but without consensus, which has not produced the expected results. The study of performance in intensive care units (ICUs) was not an exception; suffer also from a lack of benchmarking to other similar ICUs, which has limited the possibility of continuous improvement through knowledge of best practices. Through this study we have developed a model to measure the overall performance of ICUs that serves as a starting point to improve efficiency and quality. Its development has been carried out applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process methodology to a set of indicators grouped according to the method for evaluation the quality of medical care proposed by Donabedian, and incorporating cost indicators as a differentiating factor. Finally, we will identify best practices and take improvement measures through benchmarking.
