When Don Bernardo de Sandoval was elected Archbishop of Toledo in 1599, a circle of intellectuals, including writers such as Góngora, Cervantes, Valdivieso, Espinel and others, formed around him. Beyond patronage and courtly praise, these writers formulated an ideology having to do with political and social issues of particular interest to the prelate, among them poverty, the Expulsion of the Moriscos, the governance of the Spanish kingdom and empire and the policy towards the North African region.
