Resumen

The creation of Eurocities is an interesting example of local interest in cross‐border cooperation. However, the emergence of those supporting new governance along the border of Portugal and Spain is interesting. In recent years European internal borders have been adapting at different speeds and intensities. These new entities of territorial cooperation, specifically cities and municipalities within close proximity of the border and with intense historical relations, have been labeled Eurocities. With different trajectories, procedures, developments and objectives, various formats and strategies have been followed. In contrast to other types of cooperation entities, mainly on regional or sub regional scales (Euroregions and Eurodistricts), Eurocities has emerged on a municipal scale, the great forgotten one in the policies of European Territorial Cooperation, and are the main protagonists of Cross‐border relations in the Eurozone. In this communication we will address the geographic and institutional framework of these new entities, focusing our attention on the Portuguese‐Spanish border.
