Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyse the relation between alcohol consumption by youths and different risk factors: individual (Type A behavior, self-esteem), family (satisfaction regarding family environment, academic background of parents, perceived socio-economical family level) and educational (academic performance and satisfaction regarding studies). Data were gathered on 413 youths from 18 to 20 who answered to different scales related to the above variables. The results pointed out significant differences between consumers and non consumers in impatience, hostility, academic performance and satisfaction concerning studies. Thus, young people that daily or weekly consume alcohol, compared to non consumers, exhibit higher levels of hostility and impatience, worse academic results and less satisfaction with studies. Finally, the results obtained by means of a logistical regression analysis indicate that the psychosocial variables that better predict the consumption of alcohol are impatience and academic performance.
