Abstract
The image of the old witch, once so much used by the Church, the political institutions and the cornmon folk, is turned into a real professional figure when it comes to the two old women that are the main characters in two short stories by Ángeles de Irisarri. The subtle irony that defines the general tone in these tales will help us to compare the medieval interpretations of this phenomenon with others in the subsequent centuries. Far from being devilish, supernatural and inexplicable, Irisarri's witches were no more than poor and old women, victims of a manipulating society. The author allows them to speak, and presents them as courageous women and as true survivors.
