Abstract
In recent years there has been, both in the media and historiography, a renewed interest in the Islamic notion of jihad. This has caused a certain vulgarization of the concept which has sometimes led to significant distortions. This paper analyzes the legal and doctrinal essence of jihad in classical Arabic sources taking as a starting point the stipulations in the Quran and the norms in the prophetic tradition. It also takes into account the opinions launched by the most distinguished Islamic jurists from the 8th to the 13th centuries.
