Abstract
The Treaty of Amsterdam marked a radical shift in the European judicial cooperation in civil cases. The third chapter of the Lisbon treaty establishes a new regulation of judicial cooperation in civil cases. After studying the aforementioned new regulation, it is clear that the Treaty of Lisbon only aims at moderate changes in this matter. Although the Treaty of Lisbon does not amend the subject matter substantially, it does aim to effect a gradual consolidate. The objective of this research is to show the step-by-step policy pursued by the European Union regarding judicial cooperation in civil cases, and the road map that EU institutions intend to follow in the future.
