Resumen
This work explores the geologic-geotechnics characteristics of holocene sediments that infill the estuarine system at the mouth of Tinto and Odiel rivers, in the vicinity of the town of Huelva. These holocene materials are characterized by low cohesion and strength. Although in general, this system is constituted by fine very poor sorted sediments, with medium plasticity and low to very low consistency (CL and/or ML-OL types), sometimes are detected interbedded coarser sediments with lower percentages of muds with lower to middle plasticity and higher consistency (SP-SM and/or GP types). From a point of view of clay minerals activity, it can be observed that the potential of expansion is higher when the percentage of mud increases, but in general the potential for soil expansion is low. The results of consolidation tests of these sediments, show that 85 % of soils have high to very high compressibility (CC > 0.15), obtaining a correlation of CS = 0.2696CC - 0.0133. These holocene materials are characterized by low both cohesion and resistance.
