Abstract

Since 1970, the General Assembly of the United Nations, in accordance with article 8 of the Charter of San Francisco, has been urging all entities of the Organization to ensure that opportunities for employment and advancement of women are equal to men, promoting the equal representation of women in all posts and categories of the United Nations system. The first targets to achieve gender balance were established by the General Assembly in 1986, evolved up to the Beijing Platform for Action of 1995, which established the target to reach de goal of 50% of women staff, particularly at the professional and higher categories, reaffirming the goal of gender parity successively until the last year of 2011. However, at the beginning of the second decade of the Twenty-first Century remains the underrepresentation of women in most of the professional categories, especially at higher levels and of direction. But, the goal of gender parity in the United Nations system is critical, because it will increase its leadership role in the promotion of the equal representation and participation of women in all areas and in the attainment of the effective equality of women around the world.
