Late Holocene palaeoenvironmental changes (~ 2000 BP) in the Donana National Park (Guadalquivir estuary, SW Spain) were studied using geomorphological techniques, lithostratigraphic analysis and ostracode faunas. Two cores were drilled in the Las Nuevas estuarine ridge, showing an environmental evolution with five phases: 1) brackish lagoon (the Roman Lacus Ligustinus); 2) energetic event (storm?, tsunami?); 3) brackish lagoon with reduction of the ostracode density; 4) transitional, with the first apparition of fresh-water species; and 5) temporary pond, located between cheniers and levees
