Abstract

The problem of acid mine drainage is especially tangible in water stored in open pits in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Recent research studies focus on remediation using alkaline materials. This work presents the results of an experiment carried out with low cost waste coming from the paper industry for the recovery of water and its subsequent use as irrigation. Few samples of acid mine drainage from open pits were collected and subjected to tests in order to verify the neutralizing power of the different alkaline residues (biomass combustion ash, recovery boiler ash and lime mud). Positive results were obtained for the three reagents, the lime mud showed the most significant values.
