Abstract

Two estuarine domains were distinguished in the inner mesotidal estuary of the Tinto River (S.W. Spain): central and fluvial domains; the former being subdivided into lower and upper domains. Coring and vibracoring of the Holocene sediment allowed the distinction of six depositional facies within these domains: (1) estuarine channel, (2) tidal channel, (3) channel margin, (4) marsh (5) fluviaI floodplain and (6) fluvial bar. These facies are sequentially arranged from subtidal into supratidal zones which meaning is the result of the infilling process of the estuary as a consequence of: (1) the stabilized sea level about 6000 years BP, and (2) fhe great rates of sediment accumulation.
