Abstract
Gaseous at room temperature and available from natural or shale gas deposits, methane is the simplest hydrocarbon. In spite of being affordable, its use as raw material in Chemicals Industry yet constitutes a challenge for modern chemistry. Its unique use consists of the formation of synthesis gas (syngas), a mixture of carbon monoxide and molecular hydrogen. In this contribution, the distinct methodologies described for the activation and the functionalization of methane are described.
