Resumen

A lo largo de los últimos años, en la acción del Consejo de Europa para combatir la violencia contra la mujer han cobrado especial relevancia los llamados crímenes de honor, una forma de violencia de género basada en prácticas perjudiciales derivadas de tradiciones culturales y religiosas arraigadas en las comunidades de población inmigrantes asentadas en territorio europeo que vulneran los derechos humanos de las mujeres. Para su erradicación, el Convenio de Estambul de 2011, el principal instrumento jurídico vinculante adoptado en Europa para combatir la violencia de género, exige a los Estados velar por que la cultura, las costumbres, la religión o el supuesto honor no sean aceptados como justificación de ningún tipo de violencia contra la mujer, obligando incluso a los Estados a adoptar un conjunto de medidas legislativas, preventivas y de protección, contribuyendo así el Consejo de Europa a la configuración de un marco de estándares normativos internacionales para la efectiva erradicación de los llamados crímenes de honor.
