Abstract

One of the direct consequences of the disappearance of pastures is the reduction of biodiversity caused by the extinction of endemic species which were created and are dependent on these secularly managed habitats. This is evidenced in the present study, which analyzes the spatio-temporal evolution of populations of Picris willkommii, an extremely localized ruderal endemism of southwestern iberian peninsula, as well as the pasturelands that constitute its main habitat in the municipality of Ayamonte (Huelva). The results obtained in the fieldwork and the diachronic analysis of land use maps and historical documents consulted, show that in recent years there has been a drastic reduction and fragmentation of the area occupied by these agroecosystems, replaced by buildings, infrastructure and irrigated crops that can cause the extinction of the species.
