Abstract

The registration in the register of Consular registration is not obligatory for Spanish emigrants. However, it involves a series of benefits that, sooner or later, their realization. In this article are identified and analyzed the main reasons which encourage it to Spanish immigrants. Data and information obtained through a quantitative survey and semi-structured interviews carried out over four thousand Spanish nationals living abroad are taken as a fundamental basis. It is concluded that the main reasons to carry out this registration are those related to the exercise of rights and obligations citizens (especially the in suffrage in Spanish elections) and the use of the most conspicuous consular services (renewal of identity documents, registration in the Civil Register, etc.). The latter play a decisive role so that the more reluctant in principle end up registering to do so. Other important reasons are those related with assistance and protection (especially in countries with higher levels of risk and insecurity), as well as tax advantages and face to return to Spain.
