Abstract

In the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), the transition between the lower lithostratigraphic unit, PQ Group, and the unit comprising the ore deposits, Vulcano Sedimentary Complex, represents an important change in the regional palaeogeographic and geodynamic framework that involves the activation of orogenic and volcanic processes. Although this contact has been dated in different areas as late Strunian, it is generally envisaged as diachronic, given its regional significance. The present study includes the palynostratigraphic analysis of a shale-limestone sequence at the top of the PQ Group. It constrains the age previously provided by the conodonts and suggests an early Strunian age for the PQ-CVS contact in the study area. Comparing this finding with previous age data, the diachronic character of the contact and the volcanic activity in the IPB is confirmed.
