Abstract

This article is the result of a life history constructed from a set of interviews with José María Castrillo Moreno, a man with deep family ties to PI Rocio and a significant figure in the recent history of Rocio devotion. The goal of this article is to document and contextualize the experience and knowledge of El Rocio that he has accumulated throughout a long life. This account focuses on a crucial historical period that begins in the 1940s, in the middle of the postwar period, and extends to the beginning of the 1960s, just when the spectacular process of diffusion and burgeoning (masificación) of this Marian devotion was accelerating. José Maria Castrillo Moreno was president of the Principal Brotherhood of Almonte between 1956 and 1959 and he played a leading role in one of the most controversial ritual movements of the Virgin of the Dew, the "Venida" (or Coming) of 1956. From a very young age, he actively participated in the Pilgrimage to Rocío, most notably in the Procession of the Virgin, which is celebrated every Pentecost Monday. Drawing upon his memories and comments, this text seeks to recreate important events and social processes, placing them in their local and also national socio-political context. Like any anthropological life history, this text goes beyond a simple individual biographical account, and naturally has its methodological limitations. But at the same time, in addition to rescuing from oblivion valuable cultural knowledge, it also provides multiple suggestions for historical-cultural research on El Rocio and other similar phenomena.
