Abstract

All of Fray Luis de León’s biblical commentaries, with some few exceptions, were written after his inquisitorial imprisonment - if he did not in fact begin them while in the prison of the Holy Office. For these reasons, imprisonment and biblical commentary seem to be united, for they reflect both his own life and suffering, as well as the image that Fray Luis sought to leave of himself in his writing.
