Abstract
This study compares the dates of speleothems from two karstic sites in the Betic Range, which are very different in altitude but from similar longitudes (Grazalema Mountains and the Rock of Gbraltar), and shows a correlation between the climatic optimals (OIS 3 and 5) in periods of high chemical precipitation. The cold stages (OIS 2 and 4) with speleothems are worst represented at higher altitudes, whilst the contrary is true on the coastal site which comes across as a climatic refugium during this time. Coastal speleothem record are only absent during dryer and colder moments of Stage 2, within three short, marked periods (30-27.5 ky, 26-24 ky and 20-16.5 ky BP). There are no dates recorded for the last 10 ky.
