Abstract

Abstract This document contains a theoretical analysis of the sustainability of tourism destinations, with emphasis on developing countries with tourism potential. The goal, based on this analysis, is to design, build and validate an instrument to measure the level of sustainability of tourism destinations (ISDT in Spanish). To achieve this goal I selected nine independent variables grouped into three components: environmental pollution in the destination, the pressure on infrastructure capacity and congestion, and social and cultural change of the host community. The methodology was applied in three ISDT destinations in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco (Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Chinchero) resulting in an ISDT mean value for the three destinations of 0.650, 0.671 and 0.690, respectively. Measured on a scale from zero to one, where zero corresponds to a low ISDT (unsustainable tourist destinations) and one corresponds to a high ISDT (sustainable tourism destinations).
