Abstract

This doctoral thesis project investigates the paradoxical nature observed in the territorial units of Spain and Morocco in terms of agriculture. Throughout the investigation, the terms articulating this paradoxical relationship have been to be opposites or dialectical for the following reasons: on the one hand, agricultural production of both territories come to compete in the same European markets; on the other hand, Andalusian avant-garde agriculture depends on the incorporation of Moroccan labour force to carry out the harvests. Then, both competence and dependence poles will be studied, attending to the variable that best define their meaning: the social relations. At the same time, a model of cooperation called "co-development" will be studied. This factor would overcome the paradoxical nature of such relations, since it would represent a positive synthesis between the two poles of competence and dependence. The instrument of hiring Moroccan seasonal workers at source is therefore analysed, linking it to the co-development experience that such Moroccan seasonal workers establish with their places of origin and destination in the Andalusian agricultural campaigns. For this reason, the concept of co-development needs to be redefined, approaching the original experience that finds meaning in the social relations.
