Abstract

This work describes the physicochemical characterization of the first mining effluent subjected to processes of acid mine drainage, which intercepts the clean waters of the Odiel river degrading his quality. Simultaneously, the possible relationship of interdependence between the measured physicochemical parameters are set in order to propose a model capable of describing the evolution of contaminants in response to the processes and reactions taking place within the affected channel and the Odiel river. The effluent studied has a length of 2350 meters and is born from an open trench on one of the main galleries of exploitation of the Concepción mine, about 23 Km to the north of the municipality of Zalamea la Real and 10 km to the NW of the Riotinto mine (SO Spain). This stream runs naturally through a ravine to intercept, through a waterfall of about 2 meters high, the clean waters of the Odiel river modifying their physicochemical parameters observed a sharp pen colloidal precipitates which ocher stain the bed of channel and it ́s carried downstream by the current. From this point, you can verify the absence of some non-tolerant species to new acidic conditions of the river and therefore, this point can be considered as the first significant change in water quality, biodiversity and environmental indices of the Odiel river.
