Abstract

Stigma toward the mentally ill is a complex phenomenon and resistant to change. The study aims to now the attitudes toward the mentally ill in university population, and how these attitudes are related to the locus of control and the emotional intelligence. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Sample of 407 students for degrees in psychology, nursing and law and forest of the University of Huelva. We used a questionnaire composed of three scalesand somebiographical data.Results:The results showed more favorable attitudes in the students of nursing and psychology and more negative attitudes in those students with a more external locus of control and a lower level of emotional intelligence. Conclusion: A higher level of emotional intelligence and greater internal locus of control is associated with a more positive attitude.
