Zusammenfassung

This work presents a detailed structural study of the basal surface of the Playa de la Veta II gravitationallandslide, exposed within the Caldera de Taburiente (La Palma, Canary Islands). This landslide is responsible for the partial destruction of the Lower Taburiente volcanic edifice, and it is previous to the building of the Upper Taburiente edifice. The obtained data allow identifying two successive periods of sliding activity, punctuated with an intervening stage of upward doming of the basal surface of this landslide. The first sliding phase implied SSW-directed displacement of the destabilized mass. Afterwards, the central area of the flank collapse was subjected to rapid uplift, generating a NNE-SSW elongated dome-likegeometry.Finally, the NW and SE limbs of the upward arched structure were subjected to a renewed lateral sliding period, which corresponds to the second phase here identified. This evolution can be interpreted with the use of analogue models of flank collapse of volcanic edifices associated with the activity of basement faults.
