Abstract

The textural and mineralogical study of 65 samples from two long cores and seven short coresdrilled in Doñana National Park has been done. On the basis of grain-size analysis, six sedimentaryfacies dated as Late Pleistocene-Holocene have been differentiated. These facies mainly consist of finegrained sediments, locally eroded and filled with coarser grained sediments. The results indicate a bulkmineralogy association made-up of_ phyllosilicates (muscovite, paragonite, clay minerals)-carbonates(calcite,dolomite)-feldspars (Ca-Na,K)-heavy minerals. Clay mineral assemblage is composed of_smectite-illite-kaolinite-(chlorite, mixed layers). The significant illite increase in facies FA-5 whencompared with underlying sediments, besides sedimentological and paleontological evidencescorroborates the identification of several tsunamite beds in the studied sector.
