Abstract

The multidisciplinary, geological analysis of a continuous core collected in the Tinto River estuary (SW Spain) permits to delimitate three sedimentary facies. Facies FA-1 (black mud) was deposited in the channel margins or the tributary channels, whereas FA-2 (bioclastic sand and gravel) and FA-3 (fining upward bioclastic sand) are tsunamigenic facies derived from the action of high-energy events in an open estuary scenario or a more filled palaeogeographical setting, respectively. These events occurred during the last 3,800 years, with ages closely related to those deduced from different historical tsunamis in this area.
