Abstract

From probably the 15th Century until its final dismantling in the late 18th Century, Huelva had a stately castle located in the so-called “cabezo de San Pedro”. In that castle the counts of Niebla had their residence discontinuously, from 1599 to 1657. This research investigates the possible fortifications that previously occupied this site in Roman and Arab times and, from the Christian conquest to the end of the Modern Age, covers the different phases of its historical journey. Examining the archaeological, documentary and historiographic data available, the work updates our knowledge about the Huelva castle, the walls and the town gate, trying to discern what can be scientifically established today from what tradition has held without any special foundation.
