Abstract

This paper attempts to test the stochastic convergence hypothesis for total expenditure on R&D of the spanish autonomous communities as well as the relative weight of their public and private components in the period 1987 to 2013, using the test of stationarity with structural change for panel data proposed by Carrión, del Barrio and López-Bazo (2005). In the analyzed period, the convergence hypothesis is accepted both when considering total investment in R&D as when we examine this effort as a function of their public or private nature. Therefore, whether as a result of the adjustment policies or of forces operating in markets and determining the configuration of the regional business composition, the results seem to point towards greater cohesion, in terms of the innovative efforts of the different territories, which should result in some positive effects on the reduction of imbalances, thus strengthening territorial cohesion.
