Abstract

The family sphere today constitutes a part of pathological gambling that is studied little and which is nevertheless of great importance, given the numerous social implications and clinical repercussions that it has, especially if the integral treatment of this type of problem is to be addressed. Objective. To learn on a holistic basis the effects that this addiction has in the family context, especially at relational and communication level. Method. We opted for a qualitative type methodology since this fitted our subject of study better. The techniques used were both the Life History (sick and family) and the In-Depth Interview (professionals). Results. In general, we have been able to demonstrate how addiction to gambling is able to destroy the communication mechanisms that usually define relationship processes within the family context. In fact, we also found out that addiction ends up imposing its own relational patterns that eventually become accepted, even though this is a constant source of conflict and family stress. Conclusion. Living immersed in the fallacy of gambling day after day leads them to an existence ruled by anxiety and despair. These situations are transferred to the family directly and usually result in a type of pernicious relationship, hence the importance of both family socialization styles, family disorganization, and addictive behavior, especially when it comes to analyzing the consequences as regards their progeny
