Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the geological and mining research developed in the Spanish Pyrite Belt under the Franco ́s dictatorial regime, from the autarkic and interventionist policies of the 1940’s to the period of libera-lization of the mining activities that begun in 1959. The findings provide some clues to better understand the moti-vation, design, execution and results of the mineral exploration campaigns carried out to find new ore deposits of copper-rich massive sulfides. Overall, it is concluded that the mining research planned by the Spanish Institute of In-dustry improved the geological, geophysical and metallogenic knowledge of the region, thus increasing its mineral resource potential.
