Abstract

ABSTRACT. The school life is an issue that concerns families, the educational community, and in general, the whole society. Thus, we intend to study the current situation of school life in the high level schools in the Region of Murcia from the students perspective, along the academic term 2014-2015. Therefore, a descriptive transversal methodology has been used in our study and it is related to the positivist paradigm, through a random cluster sampling. To get all the information needed we used the survey type method through a Likert questionnaire characterized by five response options. Our intention has been to provide a description of the most important issues affecting the coexistence at this stage. The specific aims were: " Assess the prevalence of aggressive or violent behaviour, in any way they might alter the coexistence between the community members: students and teachers. " Give a description of the school environment that students can perceive. " Analyze the differences in the conflict behaviours between boys and girls. " Assess the perception of family support for students. " Analyze the students perception about the most appropriate resolution of conflicts in the school environment. " Examine the differences in the academic terms and cycles. " Collect all the information needed to establish, if necessary, an action plan developing improvement proposals. The study sample is representative of the Region of Murcia to a statistic confidence level of 97%, which includes the assessment of 888 pupils belonging to several colleges in different region districts. Concerning conclusions we highlight the origin of the subjects is not relevant to the results. Pupils have a very positive perception of the coexistence environment in the schools analyzed. The perception in terms of satisfaction is positive. Finding the highest percentage in behaviours that impede the classes development, like talking and laughing, we can't say there is a high incidence of conflict behaviour. We emphasize that any conduct that may sound a delinquency, like stealing materials or assaulting teachers, doesn't appear coinciding with Marchesi et al (2003, 2005) and the Basque Government (2004). Regarding the aggressions produced, as previous studies confirmed it (Ortega (1994, 1998); Marchesi, et al., (2003) y Defensor del Menor Comunidad de Madrid (2006), we proved the most frequent aggression, produced or received, is the verbal one (insult). Compared with other countries the incidence of the types of abuse or assault, is scarce. We agree with Cerezo and Esteban studies (1992) there aren't significant differences between boys and girls, aggressive behaviors affect both of them. Students have got medium-high perception of the family support quality and almost all of them say they are the ones who must resolve conflicts emphasizing dialogue as a fundamental tool to resolving issues. In conclusion we feel relatively relieved to see the results don't show a situation of maximum alert for a bad coexistence in the colleges of the region, but everything can be improved and we believe that: "we must prevent before curing". Finally, and in order to respond to the last specific study aim, a program of action has been designed and it is directed to the educational community (students, teachers and families) to provide performance measures and improvements to promote the school life between the students.
