Abstract

The aim of the present study was if there is a seasonal change in the seminal quality in male Payoyagoat. Mature male Payoya goats (n=10) were kept in a shed in natural photoperiod. Sperm production andsemen quality were determined monthly. The first 8 days of every month they were divided in two 3 daysperiods of daily collection separated by 2 days of rest. The seminal quality, was studied by means of the numberof cellules/ml, spermatic production by ejaculated and parameters of spermatic motility as curvilinear velocity(VCL), progressive velocity (VSL), path velocity (VAP), linearity (LIN), it was analyzed by means of a systemCASA (SCA® 2002 of Microoptic S.L.). A strong effect of the season of the year was observed (P <0.001) onthe sperm concentration, the highest value was observed in spring (5.09 ± 0.13x109 sperms/ml) and the lowestvalue in autumn (4.13 ± 0.16x109 sperms/ml). Equally, the sperm production (P <0.001) was maximal inautumn (6.08 ± 0.35 x 109 cellules/ejaculate) and minimal in winter (4.07 ± 0.17 x 109 cellules/ejaculate). Veryimportant seasonal differences were observed (at least, P <0.05) in the parameters VCL, VAP and LIN, thelowest values were observed during the autumn for VCL and VAP, while the opposite was detected for theLIN. These results indicate the important seasonal variation of the seminal quality in male Payoya goat.
