Abstract
Sixteen lactating Asaaf ewes were used to study the effect of milkingfrequency and supplementation with an antioxidant vitamin-mineral complexon milk fatty acid profile. Eight ewes were assigned to a control group and theremaining 8 to the antioxidant treatment, who received daily an oral dose of 1g of vitamin E (1000 IU, DL-alpha-tocopherol acetate) and 0.4 mg of selenium(sodium selenite anhydrous). Animals were fed ad libitum the same totalmixed ration. The experiment consisted of 2 consecutive periods of a 3 wk(twice-daily milking in both mammary glands) and 8 wk (once-daily milking inone gland and twice-daily milking in the other gland). Administration of theantioxidant supplement had not effect (P>0.05) on SFA and PUFAproportions. However, it decreased (P <0.05) the proportion of total FAshorter than 16 C and increased proportions of both palmitic acid and the totalFA longer than 16 C, especially oleic acid. The reduction in milking frequencyslightly decreased the proportion of palmitic acid whereas the proportion ofFA longer than 16 C was increased.
