Abstract

In 2015 a high number of abortions and weak newborn lambs showing congenitalmalformations or nervous clinical signs were reported in 4 flocks from different regions ofSpain. Initial analysis through different laboratory techniques found that the reproductivefailure was caused by pestivirus infection. Sequencing of specific regions from the viralgenome allow for the identification of BVD virus as the etiological agent causing theinfection. Besides the high number of affected ewes, the most striking findings fromthese cases were the nervous signs showed buy the affected lambs, mainly ataxia anddisorientation, and the severity of the nervous lesions, characterized by developmentaldefects of the brain. Although the fact the BVD virus can cause reproductive failure insheep had been already described, the occurrence of natural cases of abortion or congenitalmalformations in sheep is not frequent. Bearing in mind the findings from this case, thepossibility of pestivirus cross infection between ruminant species should be consideredwhen addressing reproductive failure in sheep.
