Abstract
A case of toxicity of closantel is described in a Xalda sheep occurred on a farm were someanimals died in June 2016. In the sheep submitted for necropsy ataxia, dilated pupils andblindness were noted. Bilateral symmetrical intramyelinic spongiosis of the white matterof the brain and spinal cord adjacent to the lateral ventricles and in subpial location wereobserved. Edema in the optic nerve and necrosis of the outer nuclear layer and segmentsand vacuolation of the ganglions cells were evident. We were informed by the clinicalveterinarian that the owner administered 25 sheep with Endoex and 24-48 hours afteradministration of the drug the animals presented the clinical sings. 14 sheep that receivedother antihelmintic remained normal. The presence of ataxia, paresia, recumency, mydriasisand blindness, the spongiosis bilateral symmetrical of the white matter in encephalon andspinal cord, lesions in the optic nerve and retina observed in the necropsy were associatedto closantel toxicosis.
